PREVALENCE AND INCIDENCE
- According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, between 1 and 2 million Americans 65 years old and older have been abused by some they depend on for care and protection.
- The estimated rate of elder abuse ranges from 2% to 10%.
- 1 in 14 incidences are reported to authorities, and this does not include neglect.
- Every case reported, 24 go unreported.
- The 2009 National Elder Mistreatment Study states 5% of adults experienced emotional abuse, 1.2% experiences physical abuse, sexual abuse at .7%, neglect at 5.1% and financial abuse at 5.2%.
- Estimates of financial exploitation has been reported there are 1 in every 25 cases, suggesting about 5 million victims of financial abuse each year.

ABUSE IS NURSING HOMES/LONG TERM CARE FACILITIES
Although older adults are abused in their homes, there are many cases in which
abuse occurs in other living institutions such as nursing homes and long term
care facilities. In 2008, 3.2 million Americans were live in nursing homes
along with 900,000 living in Assisted Living Facilities.
- In a 2000 study, 44% of 2000 residents interviewed said they had been abused and 95% of them had been or has seen other residents being neglected.
- 50% of nursing home staff admitted to a form of abuse towards a resident with two thirds of incidents being neglect.
- 17% of CNAs had pushed, grabbed, or shoved a resident.
- 51% reported they yelled and 23% said they insulted and swore at a resident.
- In 2000, the total number of reports received on elder abuse was 472,813.
- 20,673 complaints of abuse were investigated by state Long Term Care Ombudsman programs in 2003.
