What you can do
EMPLOYER
Abuse Registries/Background Checks
Abuse registries are used to list elder abuse perpetrators. They examine and determine if these people are capable of becoming a caretaker again. This is used as a prevention device because those who have abused elder and vulnerable adults will be flagged during background checks when applying for another job.
CARETAKER
Respite Care
If you are a caretaker, take some time off even if it is only for a few hours by having family or friends fill in for you.
Social Contact/Support
Talk with family, friends and other caretakers. Share struggles and solutions with one another.
INDIVIDUALLY
Know the signs
Warning signs are available on the Types of Abuse page.
Public Awareness
Letting people know is the most effective way of prevention. Communicating with the community can:
- raise awareness
- influence beliefs and change social norms
- advocate for the elder population
- increase support and services
Volunteer
Volunteer to be a visitor at a nursing home or care facility.
Reporting
If you suspect it, report it. Even if you are not 100% sure about abuse, report it. There is no right or wrong.
Retraining Programs
Training programs can be available for everyone. Keeping employees up to date with prevention strategies and quality care practices will only have a good outcome for the elders and the company. It also doesn't hurt for caretakers to gain new knowledge and strategies to give top quality care. Here is a list of sites for training courses and videos available:
